| HiRes® Fidelity 120 is a new feature of HiResolution Sound designed to further enhance sound quality. To enjoy the richness of complex sounds such as music, you need more sound detail or “fine structure” than to understand only words. Speaker identity, tone and emotion in the voice and other cues are transmitted by pitch or frequency changes. In a healthy cochlea pitch is encoded by accurately mapping fine temporal information to places along the cochlea which respond to different frequencies. Until now, cochlear implant systems have been limited in place resolution by the number and spacing of electrode contacts. For example with standard electrodes a musical scale consisting of 12 equally spaced notes would only be represented by 3 to 4 electrodes or stimulation sites. HiRes 120 removes this limitation by making use of the unique capability of the HiRes 90K implant to actively steer current between electrodes. |
